Gary Wanerka, MD
Dr. Gary Wanerka grew up on Long Island, and discovered Connecticut when he went to Wesleyan University in Middletown. After medical school at Case Western Reserve in Ohio, he returned to Connecticut for his pediatric training at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He spent a year in addition on the faculty as Chief Resident. Following this, Gary spent four years on active duty in the US Air Force as Chief Pediatrician and Deputy Hospital Commander at USAF Hospital Bitburg Germany, where he achieved the rank of Lt Colonel.
He returned to the New Haven area to practice pediatrics and founded Branford Pediatrics and Allergy in 1982. Dr. Wanerka is board certified in both Pediatrics and in Allergy and Immunology. Since 2012 he has practiced Pediatric Allergy exclusively, in partnership with Joan Alfiero PA-C. He has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” in both pediatrics and in allergy.
Gary has lived in Branford since 1974 with his wife Christine. Their children grew up in Branford and graduated from the Branford school system. His grandchildren are following in their footsteps.
Medicine has been a lifelong commitment of Dr. Wanerka, and he delights in seeing his former patients’ children and grandchildren.
Joan Alfiero, PA-C
Joan Alfiero, PA-C, began her career as a physician associate in 1985. She has been practicing Pediatric Allergy with Dr. Gary Wanerka at Branford Pediatrics and Allergy since 2006. She became a Certified Asthma Educator in 2016.
Joan received her undergraduate degree from University of Rhode Island and her Physician Associate degree at Yale University School of Medicine. She lives in Guilford with her husband and three children. In her free time, she enjoys being involved in the Guilford Public Schools Mentoring Program.
